Upstairs Downstairs gets second series as Miranda moves to BBC1

Costume drama will return next year but scheduling of sitcom's third series is yet to be confirmed

BBC1 is to broadcast a second series of costume drama Upstairs Downstairs and will also be the new home of hit BBC2 sitcom Miranda.

Upstairs Downstairs will return to BBC1 for a second series of six one-hour episodes next year. Scheduling of the third series of Miranda is yet to be finalised.

Both moves were confirmed by Danny Cohen, BBC1 controller. The second series of Upstairs Downstairs was greenlit by Cohen and Ben Stephenson, BBC drama commissioning controller.

A three-part run of Upstairs Downstairs broadcast over Christmas began with 7.5 million viewers and finished with 6.9 million, according to unconsolidated overnight figures.

Miranda has developed into one of BBC2's biggest hits, concluding its second series with an overnight audience of 4.3 million viewers just before Christmas.
