KFC have once again decided to clamber on to the fresh food bandwagon, in another attempt to reassure customers of the wholesomeness of their produce, given that they "know" that their "customers are increasingly interested in where their food comes from, and ... now is the perfect time to communicate it" (Hey, what's the big rush guys? It's not as though McDonald's were doing this about a decade ago ?). Their breezy new advert begins with an actor playing a KFC manager wheeling his trolley around the fruit and veg section of a generic, unidentified but friendly-looking supermarket, telling us that he's "worked in the food industry for about 20 years now, give or take", keeping it nice and casual while picking up a whole broccoli and wandering past a crate full of apples.
These words would be so much more plausible if I wasn't aware that broccoli is NOT SERVED in any KFC restaurant. The closest we get to any roughage can be located in the coleslaw. The aforementioned foodie continues to browse the aisles, then likens the fresh supermarket chicken to that served in the Colonel's finger lickin' establishment. "I mean look at this; farm-assured British chicken! From exactly the same suppliers as we use in our restaurant!" EXCITING! FRESH! HEALTHY! But hang on ... if this supermarket isn't one we can actually pop into ... is the chicken fictional? Is it like a piece of display fruit that one picks up and takes a bite out of before realising that it's made of plastic? I think I'll pop into Sainsbury's and get a Rustler's chicken sandwich, thank you very much.
